Preserving flowers for use in UV resin involves a few steps to ensure they maintain their shape and color. Here's a general guide:
Selecting Flowers:
- Choose fresh flowers with vibrant colors. Avoid flowers that are too delicate or have a high water content, as they may wilt or lose color during the drying process.
Drying Flowers:
- Press the flowers between the pages of a heavy book (in between parchment paper) for a few days to remove excess moisture. You can also use a flower press or a microwave flower press for faster drying. I have had good luck with this Aboofx Microwave Flower Press for this option.
- Another method is to use silica gel to preserve the 3D shape of the flowers. They stay in the gel for a few weeks to a month to fully dry depending on the size of the flower.
- Make sure the flowers are completely dry before proceeding to the next step.
UV Resin Molds:
- Arrange the flowers in the desired arrangement within your UV resin mold. Ensure they fit well and are evenly spaced.
- If you are using an open bezel you will need to use high-heat tape so that the resin doesn’t leak out the back and can withstand the UV rays. This is the brand I recommend on Amazon. Outus High Temperature Tape.
Pouring UV Resin:
- Carefully pour the resin into the mold, or the open bezel on tape, covering the flowers completely.
Removing Air Bubbles:
- Use a heat gun or a lighter to remove any air bubbles that may have formed in the resin. Pass the flame or heat gun gently over the surface to pop the bubbles. (I personally prefer to use a long handled lighter used for lighting candles).
Curing with UV Light:
Demolding:
- Once cured, carefully remove the resin piece from the mold. Trim any excess resin if necessary.
Finishing Touches:
- If desired, you can sand the edges of the resin piece for a smoother finish. You may also apply a clear sealant for added protection.
Remember to follow the specific instructions provided by the UV resin and Mod Podge manufacturers for the best results.
